Reports To: Senior Maintenance Engineer (Substations)

Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is a public limited company wholly owned by the Government of Uganda. The company is responsible for system operation, operation of the high-voltage transmission grid, bulk power supply, import and export of power, and ownership and operation of public optic fibre infrastructure.

Job Purpose

Responsible for ensuring efficient operation, reliability, and safety of primary transmission substation equipment and facilities, specifically power transformers, auxiliary systems, voltage regulating equipment, and switchgear. The role involves planning and executing preventive and corrective maintenance activities to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance.

Key Result Areas

1. Executing Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

• Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules.
• Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergency repairs.
• Perform routine inspections of equipment and systems.

2. Equipment and System Monitoring

• Monitor equipment performance and identify improvement opportunities.
• Maintain records of equipment performance and maintenance history.

3. Maintenance Planning

• Compile specific job requirements including tools, manpower, equipment, logistics, and materials for planned maintenance and emergencies.
• Ensure attainment of technical, financial, and safety targets.

4. Installation and Commissioning

• Install and commission substation plants, equipment, and auxiliary circuits before placement in service.
• Support equipment after repairs, modifications, and recovery from service.

5. Health, Safety & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with safety standards and UETCL policies.
• Conduct risk assessments before maintenance activities.
• Maintain safe working practices and proper use of PPE.

6. Documentation and Reporting

• Compile and update databases for substation drawings, plant equipment, tools, and consumables inventory.
• Maintain maintenance logs and technical documentation.
• Prepare job reports, weekly reports, and monthly maintenance progress reports.

7. Store Management

• Manage substation maintenance unit testing equipment stores.
• Maintain accurate records of tools and equipment.
• Inspect testing equipment regularly for defects and damage.
• Issue tools to authorized personnel and record transactions.
• Receive returned tools and inspect them for damage.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in maintenance of power transformers and high-voltage switchgear.
• Willingness to work outside normal working hours.
• High integrity, self-motivated, innovative, proactive, and a committed team player.
• Willingness to work anywhere in Uganda.

Terms of Employment

The successful candidate will be offered a contract subject to the Ministry of Public Service Guidelines on the Rationalization Exercise of Government Institutions.
