The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) Ltd was established under the Petroleum (Exploration, Development, and Production) Act and the Petroleum (Refining, Conversion, Transmission, and Midstream Storage) Act of 2013. It is a government-owned entity responsible for managing Uganda’s commercial interests in the oil and gas industry, ensuring the sustainable exploitation of these resources.
Job Summary
We are seeking a Manager Social and Sustainability to develop and oversee the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies. This role is vital to ensure the effective implementation of social management plans that secure UNOC’s social license to operate in host communities. The ideal candidate will have expertise in sustainability and community engagement, with the ability to manage and evaluate social initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and evaluate the sustainability management strategy as part of the ESG program.
- Develop and coordinate the implementation of sustainable organizational practices.
- Oversee land acquisition processes and ensure execution in compliance with international standards.
- Implement livelihood restoration programs for displaced individuals, ensuring global best practices are met.
- Conduct social studies, including human rights impact assessments (e.g., gender) and integrate social mitigation measures.
- Implement the stakeholder engagement framework and manage community engagement strategies.
- Define and implement a strategy for engaging with NGOs and civil society organizations.
- Develop a social and environmental investment strategy and evaluate its performance.
- Address community concerns related to UNOC projects and ensure timely resolution.
- Research emerging environmental sustainability issues and advise UNOC management.
- Lead engagements with key stakeholders such as Joint Venture partners and government representatives.
- Manage the sustainability reporting process for the annual and integrated reports.
- Design and implement awareness programs for employees and stakeholders on the value of host communities.
- Coordinate the development of community engagement plans, sensitization campaigns, and educational materials.
- Conduct satisfaction and impact surveys for UNOC’s projects within host communities.
- Procure external consultants for in-depth social-economic studies and recommend targeted interventions.
- Develop frameworks to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of social interventions.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Social Sciences, Sustainable Development, Community Development, or related fields.
- Professional qualification in sustainability, environmental and social governance is required.
- At least eight (8) years of relevant experience in a corporate entity, with four (4) years in a supervisory or team lead role.
- Experience in social performance requirements and interfacing with field contractors in the oil and gas sector.
- Knowledge of the oil & gas industry value chain is a plus.
- Training in Program Monitoring & Implementation and Project Management.
