About YARID
Young African Refugees for Integral Development (YARID) is a registered NGO founded in 2007 in Kampala.
YARID empowers refugees, orphans, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) across Africa to overcome
vulnerability and become educated, self-reliant, and productive members of society.
The organization supports urban refugees through programs such as sports, English classes, and vocational
skills training, while also operating in settlements including Nakivale, Kyaka, and Palabek.
About the RISE Project
With funding from ECHO and in partnership with Save the Children and consortium members, the RISE project
aims to improve access, retention, and learning outcomes for vulnerable and out-of-school children in
Nakivale, Rwamwanja, and Kyangwali refugee settlements.
Job Summary
The Classroom Teacher will deliver quality, inclusive, and child-centred primary education to learners in
Nakivale Refugee Settlement. The role supports improved access to education, retention, and academic
performance among vulnerable children.
Key Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction & Management
- Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans aligned with the national curriculum.
- Develop and use appropriate teaching and learning materials.
- Deliver lessons according to the timetable.
- Provide remedial support for struggling learners.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment.
- Manage classroom behavior and promote respect and cooperation.
Student Assessment & Support
- Assess learners through classwork, assignments, and examinations.
- Provide individualized support to learners with diverse needs.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance and academic performance.
- Develop and maintain learner profiles.
Parent & Community Engagement
- Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers.
- Build positive relationships with community stakeholders.
- Encourage parental participation in education.
Collaboration & Professional Development
- Collaborate with teachers, school leaders, and project staff.
- Participate in trainings and professional development.
- Attend staff and departmental meetings.
- Follow Ministry of Education and Sports guidelines.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the supervisor.
Child Protection
- Adhere to child safeguarding policies and practices.
- Report any child protection concerns immediately.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain school records including attendance and registers.
- Prepare and submit performance reports.
- Participate in appraisals and follow official directives.
Learner Well-being
- Monitor and report on learner well-being.
- Inform supervisors of safeguarding or health concerns.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Grade III Teaching Certificate (required).
- Diploma or Degree in Primary Education (added advantage).
- Registration with Ministry of Education and Sports (asset).
- Minimum 2 years teaching experience (refugee context preferred).
- Fluency in English; knowledge of French, Swahili, or local languages is an added advantage.
- Strong classroom management and inclusive teaching skills.
- Understanding of child-centred pedagogy.
- Commitment to safeguarding and child protection.
