The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is recruiting qualified Ugandan citizens to serve in regular and professional positions. The Uganda National Population and Housing Census 2024 will inform recruitment quotas for the respective cities and districts of Uganda.

General Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: Must be an adult Ugandan citizen and possess a valid National Identification Card.
  • Health and Fitness: Must be physically and medically fit and prepared to undergo the required tests.
  • Character: Must be law-abiding citizens with no criminal record.
  • Recommendation: Applications must be signed by the LCI, LCII, LCIII Chairpersons, the GISO or DISO, and the Resident District Commissioner (RDC). Applicants must also be residents of the area in which they apply.

Recruitment Phases

Phase 1: Online Application (10th – 24th June 2026)

All aspiring candidates must submit applications online through the official UPDF Recruitment Portal.

Required Documents:

  • Passport-size photo
  • Academic documents from recognized institutions
  • National Identity Card (NIN)

Phase 2: Shortlist and Display (1st – 14th July 2026)

A shortlist of successful candidates will be published on the UPDF website and displayed at respective city and district headquarters.

Phase 3: Physical Recruitment (20th July – 1st August 2026)

Physical recruitment will be conducted nationwide in all districts and cities. Shortlisted applicants will report individually to assigned recruitment centres for physical and medical interviews.

Documents Required During Physical Recruitment:

  • Handwritten application bearing recommendations from LCI, LCII, LCIII, and GISO/DISO.
  • National Identity Card / NIN.
  • Original and photocopies of academic documents (graduate documents must be certified).
  • Three (03) coloured passport-size photographs.

Each successful applicant will receive an introduction card, which must be presented upon reporting to assigned training centres.

Target Categories

1. General Recruits (Aged 18–22 Years)

  • Regular Forces: Applicants must possess a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) obtained in either 2024 or 2025.
  • Regular Forces (UACE Arts): Applicants must possess UACE in arts subjects obtained in 2024 or 2025 with at least two principal passes and a minimum score of 10 points in one sitting.
  • Regular Forces (UACE Sciences): Applicants must possess UACE in sciences obtained in 2024 or 2025 with at least two principal passes and a minimum of 8 points in one sitting. Subject combinations must align with core sciences such as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing, or Agriculture.

2. Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) Personnel – Below 25 Years

  • Bachelor’s degree holders in IT-related fields including Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Cyber and IT.
  • Diploma holders in IT-related fields including Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Cyber and IT.

3. Engineering and Logistics Personnel

  • Bachelor’s Degree Holders: Must possess at least a Second Class Upper degree in Land Survey, Quantity Survey, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Civil Engineering. Age below 30 years.
  • Diploma/Certificate Holders: Must possess credit qualifications and at least 3 years of practical experience in Land Survey, Architecture/Drafting, Electrical, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Carpentry, Painting, Welding, Plumbing, and related trades. Age below 28 years.
  • Vehicle and Equipment Personnel: Experience in firefighting, search and rescue, vehicle repairs, mechanics, panel beating, spraying, wiring, tyre maintenance, truck operation, or lorry driving. Age below 28 years.

4. Aviation Professionals

  • Pilot Instructors: Must possess PPL, CPL, and Instructor Rating with science combinations at A-Level. Age below 35 years.
  • Qualified Pilots: Must possess PPL, CPL/IR and science background at A-Level. Age below 30 years.
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineers: Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance specializing in Engine and Airframe or Avionics. Age below 30 years.
  • Air Traffic Controllers: Relevant rating with a BSc degree background. Age below 30 years.
  • Meteorologists: BSc Degree or Diploma in Meteorology with PEM, PCM, or MEG background. Age below 25 years.

5. Health Services Personnel

Applicants must have a CGPA of 3.0 and above and a valid annual practicing license.

  • Specialist Medical Doctors: Master’s degree in specialized medical fields. Age below 35 years.
  • Specialist Pharmacists: Master’s degree holders. Age below 35 years.
  • Medical Officers: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Age below 30 years.
  • Dental Surgeons: Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Age below 30 years.
  • Nurses: Specialist, Diploma, and Certificate holders in medical specializations. Age below 28 years.
  • Allied Health Workers: Specialists, Degree, Diploma, and Certificate holders in relevant health disciplines. Age below 28 years.
  • Other Health Categories: Clinical Psychologists, Health Informatics professionals, Biomedical Engineers, Health Information graduates, Pathology/Mortuary technicians, and Health Records personnel.

6. Legal Practitioners – Aged 30 Years and Below

Applicants must be Advocates of the High Court of Uganda and subordinate courts with at least five (05) years of legal practice.

7. Graduate Teachers (Aged 23–30 Years)

  • Secondary School Teachers: Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences with Education and valid registration certificate from the Ministry of Education and Sports.
  • Primary School Teachers: Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education.

8. Sports Personnel (Aged 18–30 Years)

Talented sportsmen and women are encouraged to apply. Minimum qualification is UCE. Participation in nationally organized sports events with evidence is an added advantage.

9. Social Scientists / Humanists (Aged 20–25 Years)

Bachelor’s degree holders in Social Work and Social Administration, Social Sciences, Psychology, Community-Based Rehabilitation, or Special Needs.

10. Musicians (Marching Band and Jazz/Live Band) – Aged 18–24 Years

Applicants must possess musical knowledge and practical ability in at least one instrument or vocal skills. Minimum qualification is UCE. Music certificates, ability to read music notations, and prior performance experience are added advantages.
