Job Title: Lab Assistant
Department: HIV/AIDS
Reports to: Laboratory Director
Location: Bukerere, Uganda
Contract Duration: 2 Months (Short-Term)
A Lab Assistant is needed for a medical center in Bukerere to support laboratory operations, ensure high-quality specimen handling, and maintain safety standards.
Job Summary
The Lab Assistant will coordinate and perform various clinical laboratory tasks, ensuring efficient workflow and maintaining high standards in specimen collection, processing, and reporting. They will also assist in training phlebotomists, maintaining laboratory supplies, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
1. Specimen Collection & Processing
• Oversee and perform phlebotomy and specimen collection.
• Ensure proper labeling, documentation, and processing of patient samples.
• Monitor patient specimen integrity and report issues to the Lab Manager.
• Coordinate the proper handling and disposal of stored specimens.
2. Laboratory Operations & Inventory Management
• Maintain an inventory of supplies and ensure timely reordering.
• Oversee the cleaning and sterilization of lab glassware and equipment.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory safety and hygiene protocols.
• Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate necessary repairs.
3. Training & Supervision
• Train and mentor new phlebotomists, ensuring proper documentation of training.
• Update manuals outlining phlebotomy procedures and specimen handling.
• Assist in laboratory workload recording and statistical reporting.
4. Laboratory Testing Support
• Assist in running basic laboratory tests under the supervision of medical technologists.
• Support microbiology and hematology processes, including blood culture processing.
• Log and distribute patient specimens to the appropriate test areas.
5. Reporting & Documentation
• Ensure accurate documentation of laboratory test requisitions and results.
• Assist in preparing reports on laboratory activities and workflow.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Education: Certification as a trained phlebotomist.
• Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience as a phlebotomist in a clinical setting.
• Skills:
o Strong knowledge of specimen collection and lab safety protocols.
o Good organizational and problem-solving skills.
o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
o Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Physical Requirements:
o Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., with frequent lifting of 25 lbs..
o Good visual acuity and ability to distinguish major colors.
