Job Overview
Kampala International School Uganda is seeking a highly experienced Head of Learning Support to lead and manage the Learning Support Department. This role focuses on ensuring that students with diverse learning needs receive tailored support to help them reach their full potential.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, expertise in inclusive education, and the ability to collaborate with teachers, parents, and external agencies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership & Management
- Lead the Learning Support team, providing guidance, training, and performance management.
- Develop and implement a strategic vision for Learning Support, aligned with the schoolโs goals.
- Foster collaboration with teaching staff to promote an inclusive learning environment.
- Serve as the primary contact for learning support matters, working closely with school leadership, teachers, and parents.
2. Learning Support & Student Interventions
- Design and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students requiring additional support.
- Oversee targeted interventions for students with learning difficulties, mild to moderate disabilities, English as an Additional Language (EAL), and social-emotional challenges.
- Ensure regular monitoring and assessment of student progress.
3. Staff Development & Training
- Promote inclusive teaching strategies across the school.
- Provide professional development for teachers, equipping them with skills to support students with diverse needs.
- Stay updated on special education best practices and share insights with staff.
4. Parent & External Agency Collaboration
- Build strong relationships with parents, providing regular updates on student progress.
- Work with educational psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists for a holistic support approach.
- Serve as the liaison between the school and external agencies.
5. Monitoring & Compliance
- Track and assess the effectiveness of learning support strategies using student data.
- Report on student outcomes to senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with school policies, local regulations, and international best practices.
6. Administrative & Budget Management
- Manage the departmentโs budget, ensuring resources are used efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of students receiving support.
- Contribute to school-wide policies on inclusion, learning support, and student welfare.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelorโs degree in Education, Special Educational Needs (SEN), or a related field.
- Postgraduate qualification in Special Education or Learning Support is desirable.
- Teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent) and QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in education, with significant experience supporting students with additional learning needs.
- Proven experience in a leadership or management role in Learning Support or Special Education.
- Expertise in developing IEPs and working with external professionals.
- Familiarity with international curricula such as IB (International Baccalaureate) or IGCSE.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership and organizational skills to manage a professional team.
- Deep understanding of learning difficulties, disabilities, and intervention strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to analyze student data for decision-making.
- Strong technology skills, including educational tools for learning support.
